SCAFFOLDING AND DIFFERENTIATION

Scaffolding is a method that allows a student to find the solution to a problem, do a task or accomplish an objective through a process divided in stages and supported by external assistance.

In this case, the tasks proposed in order to implement this method are contextualised in an English language class for Spanish students and are divided in the next way:
  1. The teacher starts a debate about social media and free speech by asking some questions about the topic
  2. The students and the teacher share their experiences and opinions regarding the subject
  3. Vocabulary related to the topic is introduced by the teacher. It will appear in a text that he or she will later give them
  4. The teacher gives the students a text, which deals with social media and free speech
  5. For homework, they have to answer some questions about it
As it can bee seen, the activity to be completed is reading a text and understand it so to be able to answer questions related to it. In order to do so, the teacher has previously provided students with the necessary vocabulary and information about it.

Differentiation is a teaching procedure which provides students with different learning methods so everyone has the chance to get the best results. That is, they are given the opportunity to work with the strategies that best suit them and their own ways of acquiring knowledge.

In this case, the context is, once more, an English class for Spanish students and the activity proposed is a project about their favourite kind of music. There are no specific guidelines regarding the method students can use in order to carry out the task, they are able to do it as they prefer. These are some examples of the strategies that might be used:

  • Power Point presentation
  • Record themselves
  • Write a story
  • Play some music
  • Draw
  • Make a comic

With this activity they are able to use English to talk about a topic which involves their personal taste and they can do it in the way they feel most comfortable at.

ASPECTS WE MAY CONSIDER WHEN ASKING QUESTIONS IN THE CLASSROOM

ASPECTS WE MAY CONSIDER WHEN ASKING QUESTIONS IN THE CLASSROOM When it comes to delivering a lesson, the teacher must take into account several aspects. Among them, there is not only the content or how it is displayed and explained to students.  Actually, the way in which questions are asked can also be a key strategy to improve the learning process. Thus, some of the techniques that might be useful when approaching this issue in a classroom will be described next. Display and referential questions The teacher must be aware of the fact that he or she can ask his or her students either display or referential questions: - Referential refers to the type of questions the teacher does not know the answer to. I.e. “What did you do last weekend?” - Display questions are those the teacher knows the answer to. But not only that, the student is also aware of the fact that the teacher knows the answer. I.e. “Which is the past simple form of the ve...
